Lung Issues

FYI all of my poppers are from the US so all are butyl as far as I’m aware.
I’m very new to poppers and am hoping for other peoples’ experiences. I started about 2 months ago with doublescorpio emerald. I didn’t feel very much just sniffing from the bottle so I researched and came across the sock method. This method made me feel amazing, but I found that a dab or two onto a sock would only really last about 10 minutes before the hits don’t seem to do anything. I also had my lips turn blue rather quickly because my area didn’t really have proper ventilation so my whole room smelled like poppers.
I finished the doublescorpio over a few days which I would assume is considered heavy usage but I feel like a lot of the liquid was wasted since the sock was sitting out in the open. I developed a scratchy throat and a cough, but nothing that alarmed me.
I enjoyed the experience so much that I ordered more poppers, this time different brands consisting of rush, jj black, jj plat, and platinum Amsterdam. I researched alternative ways to the sock method and came across the sippy cup method. My version was to use a sock instead of cotton balls, roll it up like the sock method, then place it in a gallon size ziplock bag. This felt great because each time I put poppers on the sock, the dose seemed to last significantly longer and it seemed to take me much longer to start turning blue which I assume is the fresh air I was breathing in between hits. For the record I would take a hit by unzipping the bag a little and then inhaling a lungful through my mouth and hold for at least 10 seconds, but usually longer. I would do this probably at most every 5 minutes. This seemed to be working well for me, with only a cough and maybe a little phlegm the next day or two.
I read that a lot of people alternate their bottles, often taking a hit from multiple at the same time. When a hit from the ziplock bag didn’t feel like much anymore, I added a dose from another brand. I ended up going from rush, to jj black, to platinum Amsterdam. After platinum Amsterdam was added, the hit felt more “sharp” and tasted more chemically than what I’d previously experienced. I didn’t think much of it and continued my session. My session ended at about 9pm and I went to bed at about 10pm feeling okay. I woke up at about 1am having trouble breathing. I panicked a little at first but focused on slowly breathing with deep breaths. This seemed to help and I was able to fall back asleep. At 5am I woke up again having a hard time breathing. This time I also had a wheezing sound on my exhale. Deep breaths felt a little sore, very similarly to after hard exercise while not being in good shape. I was wheezing the rest of the day, although later in the day did feel a little better than the morning.I woke up the next day feeling better, no more wheezing, but still difficulty with deep breaths. It scared the hell out of me at the time, but I feel fine 4 days later.
Sorry for the long post, but here’s my question. Is this a common side effect? Was my platinum Amsterdam just a bad bottle? Or did I just overdo it. I’ve tried researching this and have come across many horror stories. One story was a person with asthma who had issues with poppers which makes sense to me. Another person says they developed asthma without previous issues before popper use. I was wanting to ask people on this forum who are pro popper because I felt I could only find people who are against poppers and “drugs are bad” elsewhere. Thanks so much for reading, any information is appreciated.
Similar thing happened to me recently with JJ black label, I threw out the bottle I got so scared! I have used others before and never had an issue, but essentially had an asthma attack after I had had my session, gone to bed and slept for an hour or so. I had a Ventolin puffer in the house and found it worked really well, but I’ve been shaking a cough ever since! I’m tempted to go back and try again to see what happened
Only ever used isobutyl from various sources including DS, and I cough for days or weeks after a session. A heavy session is maybe 10-15 hits over a couple hours. Anyone have any experience with other formulations which may be easier on the breathing?
Popper cough with DS, is there any hope?
I’ve read in various places that Double Scorpio is considered easy-going on the lungs, headache, etc. Holy crap, if that’s true, then I’m SOL with poppers. Just a few short huffs and a 10-second half-good feeling barely worth the effort, followed by a night of hacking and exhaustion the next day.
Any suggestions for gooning? I’m curious to try English Premium Gold, Amsterdam, or Pig Sweat from PBM… but surely not at the expense of the lungs, as I only have the one pair.
if you had bought the same before and not had coughs then either they changed the formula or maybe you are taking cialas/ etc- that will make your cough worse then if you had not. Many site claim to be makers. Most are lying.
hate to say it bu maybe u were sold a counterfeit bottle try one more- if u get the same then maybe they are not good 4 u
I bought a bottle of DS Black as part of an order from C2C poppers, I was excited to try them given the hype around them – they did almost nothing for me, no head rush, or buzz. I will say that they did actually relax my muscles well enough for some toy play (along with a general relaxation), but no possibility of reaching a gooning state with them.
They did smell very “clean” in comparison to Rush/JJ (Isobutyl), with only a mild chemical smell at the end of the huff, but I did find my chest tight after them. I wont bother with them again.
Double Scorpio was rough on my beleaguered lungs after awhile.
I’ve found that the easiest on my lungs is Jungle Juice from a reliable place like poppersbymail.
What helps the most for me is exercising after using to get breathing heavy and get all the extra stuff out of my lungs. I think vitamin- C might help too.
Everyone is different but that’s what helps my cough.
So you might find this interesting. I gave up on poppers after DS wrecked my lungs. Then I tried Amyl Nit from France. Specifically Everest Titanium. Way easier on the lungs and I can popperbate again. It still makes my chest tight and gives me a cough, but not anywhere near as bad as DA. I also try to limit once or twice a month. Although I am gooning right now lols.
“Popper lung” from homebrew question
Hi all… I’m here seeking the advice and knowledge of you with more education on the topic. I had come across a recipe (for better or worse,) using sodium nitrite, a variety of option alcohols (I’ve been using isobutyl and n-amyl) and sulphuric acid (10% as in, car battery acid for refilling cores.) One question to ask is when attempting sub-freezing temp to avoid burning off the popper during production, the nitrite doesn’t go into solution effectively, but for that matter, it doesn’t go into solution at room temp either. I know I’m doing plenty wrong in my amateur attempts. I know enough to react the nitrite solution with the acid outdoors and avoid the orange gas at all expense. The results from the skimmed popper off the top has had pleasant enough effects, but certainly never like the best bottled examples of Rush I’ve store-bought before.
My biggest concerns and questions though relate to breathing issues, “popper lung”. That and effects if what I assume to be risidual methoglobonemia effects. Lethargy, shortness of breath, congested lungs with mucus. All of this has obviously led me to stop poppers (store bought or homebrew altogether.) I would really appreciate those of you knowledgeable folks’ $.02 on “Popper lung” effects and best practices. I know I haven’t given you much to go on. I had been using a recipe found here that amounts to 1 tbs sodium nitrite, mixed in solution with 25 ml distilled water, mixed with 25 ml preferred alcohol (never seems to produce a homogenous solution), and a slow drip of 25 ml 10% sulphuric acid. This is very much a bargain basement approach (mason jar, power drill mixer, etc.)
Anyway, I really appreciate your input, and apologize for my self-admitted amateur efforts. I just happen to really enjoy the effects of great poppers, and would love to be able to make much better, safer stuff. But I’ll lay off as long as it has negative health effects. Finally, a question in parting… while I know methylglobonemia is an effect of overindulgence, is popper lung a common side-effect even for quality made commercial products? If that nasty lung thing is unavoidable, even with quality commercial product, I’d love to hear from you all firsthand and will just forego poppers altogether.
Thanks for all help!
I’ve been using commercial poppers off and on for almost a year and I’ve very recently decided to quit because of the way my lungs have started feeling during and after use. After three or four inhales, I have difficulty taking deep breathes, and this lasts for a day or so. Might be because of my age (65).
Poppers have become shit in the past year or so. No matter where I buy them, sex shop or online, they’re crap. They burn my nose, they cause some lung pain sometimes, and they don’t get me very high. I don’t know what’s going on with the popper makers, but something is.
First you have to know what high purity nitrites are like. I have purchased from the chemical suppliers and isobutyl and butyl nitrite are VERY toxic full strength. BN is more toxic than IBN. The amyl nitrites are less toxic and can be used full strength. N-amyl nitrite is the preferred product. You can use BN and IBN, but they have to be diluted. Lung irritation, congestion is probably due to acidic impurities. Both low blood pressure and methe-anemia will cause fatigue and breathing difficulties. I found it’s important to add the base alcohol to the acid and not the other way around. Muriatic acid can work without being further diluted. Add about 10mls base alcohol to 10 mls 31% HCl. Battery acid is usually around 30-35% sulfuric acid. You need about 2.7 mls pure sulfuric acid per 10 mls alcohol. The sulfuric needs to be diluted and chilled before adding the alcohol to it. If it’s too dilute, it won’t form an even mixture with the alcohol. The sodium nitrite can be food grade. Anywhere from 7 to 8.5 grams SN per 10 mls alcohol is enough. Use less SN if potency is too toxic. Remember high purity isobutyl, butyl and isopropyl nitrite are TOO toxic to inhale full strength for more than 5 to 10 minutes.
Just be careful- my o2 levels are low, my doctor is confused, and I have nodules on my lungs. 2-3 years consistent use.
Been going about a session a day for the last two years with many huffs per session. Mostly super rush, jungle juice and occasionally regular rush. All bought locally in the US. Had some bottles that were harsher than others.
I got an o2 monitor during covid and tried it out the other day and my o2 was at 88% which was pretty concerning. I’m in my early 40s. Smoke weed but not cigarettes. Normally I’ve always been at 99 or so.
Went to the dr, didn’t want to tell him about the poppers, he is all confused what’s going on. Put me on steroids, took a chest X-ray and found “pulmonary nodules”. Now I have to get a CT scan and am worried how bad I’ve fucked my lungs up. After a week of inhaled steroids and no poppers, I’m back up to about 96, but he still says it shouldn’t be that low and I still haven’t told him why it may be. He’s sending me to a pulmonologist and I do intend to tell him.
Just something to keep in mind when you keep sucking down the bottle. Could be bc I use them a while after opening, could be bc I’ve got some nasty bottles, or could be unrelated. Just a heads up.
Honest question. Why not be truthful with your doctor? This is your health and they want to help you get better. Unless your Doctor is directly linked to work/insurance or something like that, no one will have access to what you tell your Doctor (I assume your in a country that has privacy laws).
In the US, they may have to file it with the insurance, which may report it to your job. That’s what I’ve heard about other substance abuse anyway.
96% is low but not terrible. If you are using poppers everyday, with multiple huffs, you might have a more persistant case of methemoglobinemia, i.e. much of your hemoglobin is not able to carry oxygen. A treatment used in hospitals, when the usual drugs might cause problems, is to pump the patient full of ascorbic acid, aka vitamin C. I would try taking Vitamin C, 1000mg over the course of a day, and after a few days see if your blood oxygen levels go up. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) reverses the chemical process that is caused by poppers, leading to methemoglobinemia.
Alkyl nitrite itself should be pretty safe to inhale. Amyl was approved for medical use so one would think it wouldn’t do permanent harm to your lung like causing pulmonary nodules. That said, poppers is not regulate and there’s no guarantee that what you have in the bottle is pure. Since one of the ingredient for poppers is very strong acid I would imagine that if they didn’t use it all up and have acid left in the bottle…inhale that would not be good for your health. Some popper make my nose get all stuffy really fast and they are usually one that burn my nose as well. Then there are good batch that does neither and is awesome. At this point the only sure way to know what’s in it is to make it yourself but alas I’m not that well verse in chemistry.
Thank you for sharing your story. Hope you recover quickly.
dude, any medicine that can actually treat you can also harm you if given to the wrong person or in the wrong doses. Prescribed and otherwise regulated medicines are legitimate medicines and virtually ALL OF THEM can hurt you. That’s the nature of medicine, actually.
I’m not so sure people trying to prevent heart attacks were taking puffs quite like OP (every night?!). but you’re right, there are no respiratory side effects listed for AM. that’s seems strange.
that said, there is also a serious “truth in labeling” issue we deal with because our little vice is prohibited. so perhaps OP has more than once been huffing something that is not well known, kinda like how “spice” can mean fucking anything chemically speaking (gosh, haven’t thought about “spice” in years, did that finally fade away?).
Thank you for your honesty and for sharing with us. I urge you to be honest with your doctor. It invites healthy discussion and it will be liberating, in a strange way for not keeping a guilty secret/pleasure. I discussed my poppers use with my doctors and it felt healthy to do so. I had a variety of reactions from them, I might add, that tested their professionalism to the fullest, so that was an interesting exercise in itself!
Thanks for informing us. So important we openly have the conversation about the good and bad. I myself have decided to cut my use to absolute minimal.. it’s so much easier said than done. What helps is that they just don’t do much anymore from such high tolerance that it’s almost pointless to even use. This post made me re-evaluate my usage a little more. Again thank you. Keep us updated pls
So I did a little more research on your problem and I think I have an even better answer than before. Repeated usage of alkyl nitrites aka poppers can lead to hemolytic anemia. Basically, your blood cells get worn out and burst/die. With fewer blood cells, aka anemia, your blood can’t carry as much oxygen. Has your doctor done a cell count, or any blood tests? I think you might be severely anemic. If that is the case you need iron supplements, and weeks or longer for your body to replenish the lost blood cells. In case you or others were wondering, a blood transfusion would not be recommended due to the inherent risks involved in receiving somebody else’s blood which are generally greater than simply allowing their body to make more blood. Especially considering hemolytic anemia is usually temporary and caused by some outside agent/cause. The lung damage is probably standard chemical burning of the mucosae, and will resolve with steroids in a week or two, but the low blood oxygen could easily be caused be severe hemolytic anemia.
The daily, heavy huffing is more than I’d ever do myself. Mostly because the effect(at least the rush I feel) is much diminished if I huff that much. And the rush coupled with the smooth muscle relaxation is the reason I use them.
Good luck getting to the bottom of it. Glad to hear you are back to the mid-90’s on your numbers. Keep us informed of how things go.
This is where you gently ask your doctor “what are the limits of what I tell you that stays under HIPAA and what would get disclosed to insurance/work?” HIPAA covers a lot but better to ask someone that knows for sure rather than not get the proper treatment from your doctor because of embarrassment or fear of it coming out. Doctors are deathly afraid of lawsuits for HIPAA violations.
Hey, I have been doing poppers for 2-3 years also. im 35. But i only do it mayybe once every other month, i have all night edging sessions and hit the bottle at certain key points, but dont overdo it. anyway, ive used most brands: jungle juice platinum, amyl, lockerroom, man scent, pigsweat, ect. and Ive noticed the toxic pneumonia-like after effects the next few days. I have to make myself cough up all the toxic gunk ive inhaled, and its the worst ever, anyway, ive cooled it down of course but still do once in awhile, anyway i was told by my doctor that they saw a lung nodule on my ct scan as well! this stuff is sadly dangerous! only gonna do one or two hits per session now, at the end to climax, hopefully we can legalize amyl nitrite someday.
Everything makes me cough and wrecks my lungs for weeks, until I found Everest Titanium (Amyl) from them. Hardly an issue and I was a happy gooner again. But the last bottle I had received (late Oct) wrecked my lungs again like everything else did. I was confused and disappointed. Maybe this explains it- a substitution?
You would instantly notice the difference between propyl and amyl. Propyl has a much stronger chemical smell and almost instant kick, very short and strong. And after repeated sniffs you get some vision effects, yellow fog and blurring in middle.
Hits lungs too, thats true.
Btw if you are happy with Titanium, should definitely try Everest Premium. Well, once they sort out the weird supply issues.
This sucks so much….just as I found AMYL and Everest, 0 side effects poppers, they become unavailable. Propyl poppers fuck me up so with chest/breathing problems for days/weeks after.
I tried a brand called PUR-AMYL from a different site, says it’s amyl nitrite. It isn’t. Exactly the same sides is Propyl.
Anyone know where to get legit Amyl poppers now in EU?
Explains why the Jungle Juice platinum has been wrecking my lungs after. Just checked the bottles and yup got Isopropyl. Not happy.
Popper lung
Why am I struggling to breathe for the next few days after using poppers I never used to have any problems when I used to use them a few years ago now I can’t breathe and just coughing all the time
It doesn’t seem to matter what brand or wear I get them from there all the same end results
Have you checked the contents on the bottles? If they are all isopropyl nitrite, I would not be surprised if all roads lead to this conclusion.
However, if you are trying poppers with different alkyl portions (like isobutyl, amyl or isoamyl) and still get the same effects, I think this might be an indication that poppers are not for you. You might want to withdraw from using them if they are making you feel consistently bad regardless of which chemical they are.
This happened to me last year. I had trouble breathing for a while, but it eventually went away. Now I do poppers once in a while and do small sniffs only. Sometimes when I do more than small sniffs it’s hard for me to breathe.
Same here.
Actually sought medical help. Was put on tapering steroids for five days and that helped relieve the symptoms but it scared the SH*T out of me as I have Asthma and know what it feels like to not be able to catch your breath. My oxygenation level was down in the low 90’s. Freaked out a bit because my lips were blue, couldn’t catch my breath and my rescue inhaler was doing absolutely nothing to help.
You might have an allergy to the ingredients but basically you are looking at inflammation in your lungs which is NOT a good thing.
My suggestion is to do nose hits only and not deep breaths, that is where I got into trouble. The buzz from deep breaths is amazing but not worth the difficulty breathing for a week, not to mention and longer term issues you might be causing.
FYI I was using Rush, Super Rush and Jungle Juice Platinum. Not sure if other brands/ingredients would do the same but figure they probably would… IF I go back to using, I will have to do it in moderation and only short sinus sniffs. The deep stuff is out for me 🙁
I bought a bottle of DS Black as part of an order from C2C poppers, I was excited to try them given the hype around them – they did almost nothing for me, no head rush, or buzz.
I wont bother with them again.
if you had bought the same before and not had coughs then either they changed the formula or maybe you are taking cialas/ etc- that will make your cough worse then if you had not. Many site claim to be makers. Most are lying.
Popper lung trouble
I was hunting for an hfo experience and the mythic super-O. It only took 5 sessions of mind-blowing popper bliss before I had to stop. For the next 7 months I coughed and every breath was painful. I seem to have finally recovered well but I’m scared my body won’t be able to take any more. From reading other posts it seems my new bottles were bad (probably from resting on the shelf in the store too long) and had too much acid built up. I had the Iso garbage and wish I had a safe way of obtaining a safer Amyl bottle but all reviews are mixed and I don’t think there is trustworthy reliable source out there. Making it looks hard and risky to me. That was the best feeling in my life. I thought all bottles were that bad but recently I’ve begun to think that since so many people here take it for years with minimal repercussions that perhaps if I had better bottles I could lightly test out the waters once more. I miss that mind-bending pleasure!
Harm reduction and isobutyl work throughs or guidance towards less adverse sinus affects as in heavy cough
Final use of isobutyl and going big need any pointers tips guidance prep and methods please help me out the joy of the first year have been long gone due to sever coughing stuff up after tiny uses wanting to get 1 more hefty session on isobutyl b4 I call it quits to wait for something better .
myl nitrates are corrosive, and frequent use will damage your lungs faster than they can recover and you end up with a chronic inflammation.
I know it’s not the answer you want to hear, but you’ve got to reduce your usage. Take a few weeks off, give your lungs time to heal. Don’t use poppers daily.
(If you can’t live without poppers for a month, you have a bigger problem that might require professional help.)
I found using Cialis or viagra makes the cough worse. the more I used the worse the cough. I took cough medicine lol it gave me terrible runs omg.lol and ahhhhhhhh 1000 mg of vit C was good maybe take more.I also think they changed the formulas. 2 yrs ago I had sometimes a minor cough then a little worse and worse- In nyc popper quality went down as the panic virus went up- I think it is still most garbage. but what do I know.Has anyone else seen similar?
Is shortness of breath one of the side effects? And if so for how long after you stop huffing ? Many thanks. X
Lipoid Pneumonia.
Look it up. Doing heavy poppers for an extended amount of time will give you this (poppers are a type of oil). I’ve had it before, and the symptoms were shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing. It lasted for about 10 days, but went away when I took an extended break.
It most certainly is. I think it’s likely a combination of two things – the actual damage the nitrates cause (they damage skin, pretty sure they can damage lung tissue) and your body’s own inflammatory response, closing some smaller airways with swelling. This also adds up that often this doesn’t come on while taking the poppers, but sometimes hours after (about the amount of time the inflammation would take to build up). The shortness of breath often settles over the coming days, also indicating there is some kind of damage/inflammation process going on.
Theories aside, I have tried with no success to find ways to prevent it (I have similar issues and have tried some stuff out). Antihistamines don’t seem to change it, neither does deep breathing to remove whatever of the nitrates is hanging around at the bottom of your lungs. It’s also probably a sign you’re doing some level of damage, and any lurker on this subreddit will tell you how many people come forward saying their blood oxygen saturations have dropped through chronic use.
As with any vice, best in moderation, and best avoided entirely if you want to avoid all risk of unwanted side effects. I wish I had a better answer for you, but that’s the best I’ve got.
Thank you so so much as you have described exactly what has happened it was several hours later that the breathing was laboured. I’m fairly new to poppers but this has never happened before but having read your feedback I think a combination of excessive AMYL and later Viagra contributed to this unpleasant side effect. Once again thank you.
Shortness of breath isn’t a good sign.
Were you taking anything else while doing poppers?
I would take a few days off, at least. And see a doctor if it happens again.
Yeah don’t combine Viagra with poppers within 24 hours if you have any concern about blood pressure. Shallow breathing means your lungs were having trouble getting oxygen into your blood, so Viagra likely had cause part of your problem. You could have a heart attack or pass out if you continued.
substitute for poppers?
Since poppers have caused damage to my lungs and generally doesnt seem to agree with me anymore, i want to stop using it. It causes so much physical pain and anxiety for me and i can feel my health deteriorating because of it. Im not here to argue over how dangerous it is. It certainly is and has been for my body, i know that much.
So i was wondering if anyone has wanted to stop using it before and if any of you have found any substances or drugs that had a similar effect of relaxation and pleasure that poppers provide. Im hooked on that feeling and, even though i never wanted this, find sex kinda boring without it now. Poppers can ease my fears and insecurities during sex so that when i do it without poppers, it feels pointless and weird cause i cant relax and be fully in the moment.
Its hard to but i can only encourage you to do so. I think they do more damage than people are yet willing to accept. I think a lot of the newer ones are impure and actually dangerous. Its too bad i do like the effect it has on me a lot but i dont think i can use it again.
Im sorry to hear that. I can imagine that more people will get hurt by it as time goes by and the newer brands are consumed more and more. I mean, its common knowledge that poppers have long term risks for anyones health. But the short term damage is on the rise it seems. I think we need to be ever so careful at the moment.
Yeah in any case heavy use and abuse of poppers cannot be good. Ive had to learn that lesson the hard way myself. I feel like i dont want to condemn them, as long as people know what they are using is legit and works for them.. but theres so much of it out there that is shady and unreliable at this point.
I think I fucked up my lungs
Hey. So I’ve been doing poppers heavily for the past three months. I put two cotton balls on a plastic bottle and hit, they hit pretty hard. But I always felt my throat hurting and felt shitty the next two days. Two days ago I had a heavy session and woke up the next morning with my lungs hurting, this has never happened to me before. They hurt when I’m on certain positions, especially my left lung. I also feel that my acid reflux has worsened.
Has anything like this happened to anyone else? The lung thing. I know they can give you a sore throat and a cough, but I’ve never had my lungs hurt before. I’m also scared that the fumes have reacted badly with the plastic bottles, although it didn’t smell weird and the bottles never deteriorated.
Anyway I’ve decided to stop, which it’s a shame because I love poppers but this has got me really worried about my health and sadly you don’t know for sure what the chemicals you are inhaling have. I feel better today but if I don’t improve I’m going to go see a doctor (I don’t know what I’m going to tell them cause I live in Latin America and they are usually not that open minded)
Thanks for reading.
I have a feeling the plastic bottle might be the issue. I did the same thing and had similar problems. There might be residue or some reaction with the plastic that caused toxic fumes to be created. They are stored in glass for a reason….I’d stay away from plastic containers.
Does anyone have problems with lungs after a session?
Been having problems with breathing after even light popper session like my lungs are not able to take as much air in as normal, my lung capacity has never been great, ex smoker, but it’s real bad for like the first 48 hours after, anyone had any thing similar happen to them? How did you remedy the problem
We do complain of coughing and feeling a little scruffy in the lungs for a day or two. But I think, for us, its BC we huff and marathon for few hours when we use it. So I guess that’s expected. Nothing we can’t shake off in a day or two tho. Profoundly more so with old poppers.
You either have too much acid in the popper and/or nitrogen impurities. Poppers make you anemic too….so that’s a double whammy to breathing.
Popper use linked to cancer, lung disease?
Hey guys, read this article a little while ago which I can’t find stating prolonged popper use could lead to lung disease and cancer. Anyone heard/read something similar or something to disprove?
Was it a peer reviewed medical journal from a respectable source?
I’ve only heard the “bad” (I forget which iso-_____) form can cause blurred vision, loss of vision, ect
The fluctuation in your eye pressure is another area
I’ve heard that as well. I believe I read about the risk of cancer/respiratory disease in a trusted source. I’m sure I’ve read something to that effect when the UK banned them, saying they did so because they were carcinogenic.
It’s been a while since I’ve read the article but I believe the research found that there could be (COULD BE) a correlation (not necessarily a causation) of increased cancer and poppers in men with suppressed immune systems (namely, HIV). More research would really be needed to prove even that, but hey common sense does say we are inhaling a chemical that we don’t know how it impacts the body long-term because there is so little research on it. On the other hand, everybody has some kind of vice that is going to shorten their life span. The question is whether that vice is worth the potential and unknown risk.
I’d be dead by now if true.
I was lucky enough to have access to pharmaceutical grade amyl before poppers were banished in the US for a time. I don’t know anyone now or in my past that has suffered any harmful side effects or disease. I myself have impeccable bloodwork. Do I need glasses now because of poppers? Maybe, but my eyesight is terrific at night, and I don’t need glasses to drive, so my eyesight is likely genetic. I can also run a 9 minute mile, so lung function is ok.
Lung issues with certain brands?
I’ve been poppin’ occasionally for a couple months now, tried a few different brands. Had a good time with black-cap “Rush” and Iron Horse, and enjoyed Double Scorpio but found it didn’t have enough kick for me. Recently found a local shop that’s run by a guy that seems to know his stuff and carries a good selection, and picked up some real Rush, with the red cap.
With the other brands I’ve tried, I’ve had a bit of a cough afterwards if I go really hard all night, but this bottle of Rush fucks up my lungs with just a little hit or two. My breath feels really shallow, like I cant draw in a full volume, and I get a nasty cough. I ended up tossing the bottle after 3 or 4 sessions.
This happen to anyone else? Is it just luck of the draw with what brands work best for you?
Isopropyl poppers are usually the worst culprit for playing havoc with your respiratory system but other poppers can also give you a cough. Usually the cough goes away after a couple of days, but if you have a persistent cough it might be an asthmatic cough which will require an inhaler for treatment and a break from poppers for a few weeks. This happened to me with isopropyl.
What I would say is don’t be driven by brand names too much, be more concerned with the chemical content of what you are sniffing. Not many of us can be 100% certain of what we’re sniffing, but at least find out whether you’ve got isopropyl, isobutyl, amyl (pentyl) or isoamyl (isopentyl). You ought to be able to identify a popper formulation which works for you without too much of a cough, but if you hammer poppers all night you will be lucky to get away without a cough the next day. I am sure a lot of us have been there, done that!
I’m not sure about all night, but I can’t hit a well made product hard for three hours without getting a cough, sore throat or any respected distress. As far as type of nitrite is concerned, the alcohol that creates the most respiratory distress is Amyl (Pentyl and its isomers). The alcohol itself causes this ‘poppers cough’.As for method of production, very strong acids are used, which should be neutralized fully, but often aren’t, at your expense.
A quick way to neutralize (which should help with realtor distress and nose Burns):
For a 30ml bottle, add about 5ml distilled water and sprinkle in 5 grams of baking soda; shake until it stops fizzing, then use an eyedropper to skim the water off the bottom; the baking soda can be filtered out with toilet paper.
If that doesn’t reduce the issue, then there are likely very high levels of contaminants in the popper, and it’s not recoverable.
Poppers shouldn’t cause lung/throat problems. There’s probably too much acid in them if they do.
Lungs/Chest Wrecked after heavy popper session?
So yesterday my new order of poppers came in the mail, this is my second order I have ever gotten (Got both my 1st order and this one from USPOPSHOP.com) The 1st order I had gotten almost 2 weeks ago. It was just one bottle of HEAT (Which the site claims is isobutyl) I used that bottle over the course of a week or so, until it was empty. Really liked these “popper things” so I decided I was into them and I choose to order a few more bottles. So this time I ordered another bottle of HEAT and another kind called INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH (Also claimed to be isobutyl). When my order arrived I was really stoked and couldn’t wait to start sniffing and jacking off like crazy. I opened the bottle of INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH and inhaled deeply twice. This stuff smelled just like the HEAT I had before. Once again I was filled with sexual bliss as I sniffed over and over again until I came hard. I repeated this a few times over the night for a total of about 4 sessions. After my final session, I was finding that I was feeling moderate levels of breath shortness and I was also getting very large spots of yellow/purple in the center of my vision. The spots went away but my lungs still feel like they aren’t giving me enough air and I have a wicked bad cough now that’s been keeping me awake, I also just feel like I got a light feaver, long story short, my session were fantastic, but I feel like SHIT right now. I did a bottle all last week, just as hard and as often as I hit this one and I was fine, why am I feeling this way all of a sudden? Maybe this version is stronger? Batch maybe is different? All I know is that my chest never felt this crushed on my 1st bottle. =/
Any thoughts on this happening with a bottle that was just opened? The older bottle I ordered from before ended up just fading out (Made my nostril burn a little but other than that it did literally nothing, was like sniffing air) but this happen to me after just opening it. The high hit me like a bulldozer, but so did the after effects. Its been about 8 hours since my last session now and I’m feeling like I’m getting my full breathing ability back at least.
If you have deleterious effects, they are not associated with alkyl nitrites; the symptoms you call out are all degradation effects of nitrates rather than nitrites.
A well composed and stabilized alkyl nitrite is pure heaven, but nobody is stabilizing their product very well.
USPopShop seems to use potassium carbonate to slow down decomposition, but they do nothing to remove water vapor which hastens degradation and penetrates the bottle every time you open it.
I suggest NOT using the same bottle to store and to dose; either try the sippy cup method or my dosing device method; anything is better than straight from the bottle (you eventually overcome the k-carb’s ability to slow decomposition.
If you find a source that has reliable freshness, you can prolong its shelf life by adding (to a 30ml bottle) 0.6 grams of potassium carbonate and about 1 teaspoon of Molecular sieve 4a.
Yeah you do bring up a lot of good points, I appreciate the information. I just gotta put my foot down and exercise a bit more self control (Something I’m really bad with when it comes to pleasurable things) I just love getting zonked out and sex drunk on them, but if this shit keeps happening, then using this frequently is no way at all worth it. Its such a shame that these products have to basically be driven into the black market because of stupid legislation. As usual, a drug law making something more of an issue than actually fixing it.
Definitely a sign you should back off the poppers for at least a week. Give your lungs and eyes time to heal and lower any tolerance you have built up.
You should stop using poppers at the first sign of respiratory problems. Poppers can irritate and you need to let your lungs and bronches recover.
In your opinion, what are the least harmful poppers and why? (Brand and kinds)
Hi all, i have read multiple posts about some ingredients used in poppers being more harmful than others. It’s great info but I’m finding it difficult to choose an actual brand and kind. A lot of the bottles don’t list ingredients, dealers don’t know, webstores don’t list ingredients or use different terms.
My ask is: can you post a brand and kind of poppers you think are the safest in your opinion? Im looking for the exact product name.
A brief why would be much appreciated as well.
Thanks popper brothers
I was weird with how sensitive I was to turning blue from them if I gooned too much; now it happens after like 3-4 hits. And I currently have what I lovingly call “popper cough”, but I don’t so much actually love it. It’s been like this the last few times I’ve done them, and I even have tried multiple different brands. With the coronavirus raging right now, I feel like this could introduce a possible lung complication if I get infected. It’s kinda scary. I’ve loved poppers since I first discovered them, and I was always the “poppers are perfectly harmless” cheerleader. Now, the evidence had stacked to convince me that they should, at a minimum, be used with caution.
It’s like you read my mind, I am also former smoker. SAME. EXACT. CONCERN. TO THE FUCKING “T”.
So, my foolish optimism tells me that it is so corrosive, it should kill this fucking virus like napalm. Flip side of that coin – if it burns your nostrils, lips, etc. – what exactly does it do to your lungs? I mean, ffs we’re inhaling a highly corrosive compound.
So, back to our discussion. While all these things are certainly a reason to pause, we all well know why we are how we are and where we are. Not to say that there’s no stopping it, but it is a choice.
What I found is that if I stopped for like at least 3-4 days, my lungs cleared up. I’d still get winded easily and if I tried to smoke weed, I would get terrible and painful coughs, so I try to give my lungs some time to reset. The longer the better. Maybe give it a shot?
Be safe.
Amyl Pently Isobuty Isopropyl
In that order. Amyl is probably the best, it has the least if any side effect at all. People had them get no headaches, no eye problems, nothing at all. Some say it’s weak because there’s no kick like the others but it has a long duration like up to 2mins when others like 30 seconds it usually good for sex.
Pentyl has that kick and moderate duration also with the least side effect if any.
The rest is cancerous and eye problems.
Just learned Double Scorpio is isobutyl, Most of the JJ are pentyl.
You can look at poppers-aromas.com.eu and they list of what alky they are but use them as a guide, not a rule. Also, if you do, don’t order more then 3 from. Any more then that it somehow gets flagged by customs and say goodbye to your poppers.
Citation needed. I’m seriously concerned that there is no accountability, no verifiable quality control, lack of regulation or standards, unknown consistency, unknown ingredients, counterfeits, doubts in veracity of manufacturers, and so on. So, I am curious, because my current go-to is almost exclusively Isobutyl.
Pentyl Nitrite is the same as amyl nitrite, pentyl alcohol is the correct name for amyl alcohol.
Also stay the fuck away from iso-propyl nitrite if you have any history of glaucoma or eye problems in your family since it increases intraocular pressure to dangerous levels.
Pentyl nitrite is sold as “RUSH™ Extra strong” here and “Rush Cristal” here in Europe.
Jungle Juice fucked my sight up for 2 weeks to return to 80%. I could not drive at night, everything was too bright. Remember “PROP” – you’ll be propping yourself up with a blind man’s cane. Iso BUTyl – for your BUTT. See. Easy.
If any are safe it is only the old stuff. Amyl Nitrite I think the name is. They don’t sell that anymore as far as I’ve seen. Anything available to buy in America today is risky. After I developed popper lung I had to stop. If I ever go back (and I want to terribly) it would have to be homemade and I don’t have the skills to do so.
A consistent cough from popper overuse; I find it only happens when you get bootleg poppers (a lot of stores don’t seem to sell the real McCoy) it sucks.
Permanent lung damage from French isobutyl poppers
I can still feel a pain in my chest & tightness of breath & lightheadness, nine months after some heavy binges on French isobutyl poppers, particularly the ones made by Jolt.
Quite a few people at the time also reported bad side effects from using this particular brand.
I did definitely overdo them & use them much more heavily than I should have done: all-night sessions, 20+ huffs, etc.
I’m still regretting it now! I can feel lasting damage to my airways. Perhaps it was “the straw that broke the camel’s back” and I have to also consider the damage done by the 6 years I spent as a smoker in my 20s, and the previous 5 years of heavy poppers use (both isopropyl and isobutyl).
But nothing ever gave me such bad side-effects as these French bottles, and I really feel I’ve permanently damaged my lungs, and if I ever go near poppers again I get a ‘wet brain’ sensation too. Like I am directly huffing acid.
Is there anyone else who huffed from those French bottles last year, and who is still feeling the damage now?
Thanks for your advice. My doctor knows I’ve had problems in my life & that abusing poppers has been part of that. (Some time last year he referred me to an eye-clinic when a bad isopropyl binge caused vision degradation!). I have an appointment scheduled with him for next month and I’ll ask him about my lungs and airways.
I’m still feeling the damage nine months later.
In Jan-March, I used isopropyl, and once Pure Amyl.
From April-June, I didn’t use poppers at all.
In July, I had two isopropyl binges, both times using three bottles of Liquid Gold overnight (as it goes flat after a few huffs). After both these occasions I felt sick for a week, with very low energy, depressed mood, shortness of breath, confusion, panic, reduced attention span, ,decreased mental function (almost like becoming dyslexic), and a feeling of foggyness in my head, as if there was stale popper fluid stuck in my brain itself.
So it might feel like I’m blaming the French poppers for the side-effects of nasty old isopropyl, but the feeling of damage to my lungs was something that only started when I used/abused Jolt products over three or so months last year.
Anyway, as you say, I’d best see a doctor if I think there’s a problem! Although I’m sure there’s nothing that could be done about it, except never using poppers again.
I had bad side effects from the French poppers, too. My coughing was so bad and lasted so long (a couple of weeks) that my wife insisted I get a chest X-ray. There wasn’t any damage. I stopped ordering from France and I’ve found a brick-and-mortar that I buy from regularly because I know they have good, quality poppers and I don’t get the hacking cough.
Just curious to know – is it possible some manufacturers are not neutralizing the acid because doing so would dampen the popper’s effects?
Glad you posted all this and happy to see all the corresponding comments. From the moment this reddit began I have been saying to be careful. Poppers – especially store bought ones – effect people differently.
I did store bought from about 1965 through 1988 before making my own because I realized off the shelf was adversely affecting my health. But I have been doing poppers nearly everyday since 1965. I’m an old man and my health issues are age related – diabetes, Parkinson, falling apart. I am open with all the doctors – have buried 3 – and as they learn about poppers their only response is “Don’t get addicted.” I’m addicted. But healthy.
HOWEVER!!! This is me – and my wife and our friends. NOT YOU! If poppers bother you in any way – ditch them. First time I smoked a cigarette, I coughed. That was the end of those. Just react accordingly and you’ll be fine. Might even live to enjoy miserable gifts like diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease!
“To be honest with you, if I could share my deepest wishes with anyone so they do not walk into the same trap as I did, I would say, stay away from poppers. The poppers has quite literally f***ed up my lungs. I am now on chronic asthma medication, including Ventolin (for use during the day when my chest gets tight), duolin (which tastes like a donkeys arse and makes me quite nauseous) and alvesco (which has so far given me the most painful oral thrush I have ever experienced).
I have stayed away from the poppers, but it has been hard. Look, we are all adults (or semi adults) so let me be honest…sex and masturbation just isn’t the same without it. Orgasms are mediocre…but my question is why are they mediocre? Because I have forgotten what its like to enjoy an orgasm without poppers. And thats why I am recommending you stay away from it, before you start yearning for it, whether it be when pleasing yourself or a partner or jumping around on a dancefloor.
Getting back to my lungs. Right, my asthma is under control, however as I am lying in my bed typing this I have a constant crackling sound emanating from my lungs when I breathe. Now this crackling noise, as far as I could research is called the death rattle…not too comforting. I have kicked cigarettes for vaping, and I cannot stand the propylene glycol the add to the vaping juice as it causes even worse havoc.
So my jogging in the mornings and gymming in the evenings have come to a halt, as I cannot handle the pain in my chest when I am physical, and sex has even taken a bigger tumble, because I cannot even bring my gf to climax before I keel over and have a coughing fit.
What started out as symptoms that happened after huffing poppers are now a regular stumbling block in my life. Whether it was the poppers thats caused it, I dont know, but one thing is for sure, it played a helluva role in destroying my lungs the way they are now.
So, I’m not telling you what to do, but just be smarter than me, and heed the warnings your body is showing you. The human body is very clever, if it doesn’t like something, it’ll tell you. If only my brain was smart enough to listen to my body…”
I have reached a level of damage where I am fucked up by poppers weeks after using them. Acid burns to my lungs, clouded thoughts, blocked sinuses. So the only answer for me is not to use. I am way too young to struggle for air when I walk up a hill in the morning.
For me the worst trigger was owning a laptop which I would use in bed. I got rid of it so the urge is not so strong But I’m left with all the damage I’ve done over the years.
That reminds me of the old joke:
“Doctor, it hurts when I do this” “So stop doing it then!”
I don’t need to waste a doctor’s time to be told that continuef use of poppers will cause chronic breathing problems for me, together with memory loss and impaired mental function.
All the information I need about the consequences of my continued poppers use – and the solution – is contained in this series of videos, which repay repeated viewing:
If I try to control my popper usage, I don’t enjoy it. If I enjoy it, I can’t control it
The verdict of continued use is inevitable annihalation.
Anyway I am clearly very out of step with a reddit called PopperPigs so I won’t post here again. Good luck everyone and I hope all those who need it will find recovery.
Sniffed a bit too hard on a poppers jar and got some in my nose a few months back. A bit went down my throat, didn’t think anything of it until I realized that this stuff is made out of. Rather major headache for a few days after that plus chest pains (I don’t think my nicotine use helped). I went to the doctors 3 days after the incident to get some sort of help since the symptoms were decreasing way too slowly.
After taking HBP meds over a few weeks and lowering my nicotine intake I started feeling better. I’m finally working out again which I thought would help with my now much less frequent discomforts in my heart but it seems like it’s only making it worse. Not sure if im pulling too many blinkers on my nic salts or what but it seems like my heart isn’t adjusting. What the fuck could a doctor do anyway ? Did I just fuck up my body and I should wait it out a bit more ? It just feels dumb if I can’t make my cardio better to heal what am I supposed to do ?
former smoker – I noticed that once I started using poppers, it fucked with my heart. Like I would feel my heart skip, sometimes even in my throat to the point where I’d want to cough! I’ve stopped using them for more than 30 days and still had days when I had skips. I have not gone more than 30 days without sniffing yet, so, hard to say if they are contributing or just my age is letting itself be known.
Had a stress test, EKG (which did show some minor abnormalities that my doc attributed to “just about anything”, but nothing major), and ultrasound of the heart. Was told all clear, just exercise, which I have been trying to do.
Bottom line, check yourself out, get an all clear. I quit smoking 3 years ago after 20+ years of smoking. NOt gonna lie – it was because I took a heroic dose of mushrooms. There’s a lot of evidence suggesting mushrooms help quit smoking. YMMV, not approved by FDA, do not attempt, not a doctor, batteries not included, provided for entertainment purposes only, etc.
I don’t recommend “brands”, I recommend you find the company that can guarantee the chemical compound: Amyl & Pentyl.
My best poppers experiences were from UK & EU company’s.
I recommend trying delta 8 THC vape carts. longer lasting buzz and no lung breathing difficulty.
I stopped huffing popps because I get heavy chest and difficulty breathing the next day.
Lay off the poppers until there’s a vaccine for coronavirus!
This seems pretty obvious, right? Poppers do have a negative impact on your respiratory system. And right now there’s a dangerous and in some cases fatal respiratory virus spreading pandemically across the world. I actually didn’t use poppers in two years, but I’m so stressed by this coronavirus thing that I’m craving them. In the past for years I turned to poppers previously when I was stressed, which made me more stressed because it weakened me. Porn became ‘better’ because I was stressed and intoxicated. And often the poppers were shitty and I just hit them harder, which resulted in more anxiety. And so the cycle continued.
But, this situation now, is some serious business. It’s a time to be strong and to be in control of our health and to look after our bodies, and not to take any unnecessary risks. Popperbating can wait! No point being a candidate for the Darwin Awards.
EDIT: If you’re still in doubt, watch this video of a 39 year old woman with COVID:
thats nieve, theres a fatal difference between catching it healthy vs catching it with what poppers cause many of us, that lingers for weeks not hours(laying off wont fix quick enough): 1. weakened immune system 2. low oxygen levels like COPD
[see my post about ‘lingering methaemoglobemia’ this year here, i stopped and its taken 2 month to recover breathing from 82 to 87%, and my immune system still weakened.] proved poppers were the quick cause and abstinence the months -slower remedy
the people most at risk are those who have breathing difficulty might need a respirator or even thats not gonna save em. think about it, COPD and weak immune system means WHEN (not if because its inevitable all of us) you get it, youre gonna get FAR worse symptoms and damage, and your body will fight it weaker than normal meaning you might succumb to it or have it months longer infecting others or others dying while youre stuck respirating machine blocking.
VERY nieve !
if there was a shortage of respiration and immunity, causing deaths in your local community, why do the one thing to make the shortage bigger – huffing chems?
if you huff, you need ER as backup, but it might not be there for you in 2020 or someone else will die waiting while youre treated first?
Regardless of the proof or evidence of how poppers effect you, and how many gadgets you have to check you oxygen, etc., you’ve gotta be completely bonkers to think it’s wise to inhale a volatile chemical into your chest and lungs at a time when there’s a global respiratory pandemic that can kill even healthy people!
Poppers do also have an effect of suppressing the immune system for a period of days after exposure. (http://poppers.cfsites.org/custom.php?pageid=8068)
After having used poppers for 4 years, I feel as though I might have some wisdom to share regarding the side effects that I have observed to have experienced as an individual or with others. I’m not a biologist or a chemist, but I do believe in empirical data as the best method for making conclusions. Therefore, in order to assist people who may come to this subreddit anxious about their forthcoming/current popper use, I am creating this post to better inform people about the joys and risks of this generally safe drug.
  1. Do not take poppers if you have a preexisting heart or lung condition. Poppers are a vasodilator that manipulate your blood pressure, heart rate, and the chemistry of your blood. Most people will be fine, but you take the added risk of heart failure, arrhythmia, and palpitations when taking this drug.
  2. Do not take poppers if you are on blood pressure medication. The same explanation for number 1 pertains to number 2… Medications include Viagra, Sildenafil, Baby Aspirin, Blood Thinners (heparin, for example), etc
  3. Do not take poppers in conjunction with alcohol or weed unless you are prepared for it. The chances that you pass out due to a massive drop in blood pressure or O2 levels are increased when you take poppers with these drugs. All 3 are CNS depressants. (For the record, I have taken poppers with weed and alcohol, and I was mostly fine, but it’s obvious that the risks are higher)
  4. You might suffer from a headache. Sometimes it will turn into a migraine. Stop huffing for a few days and drink water. You’ll be fine.
  5. You might suffer from spots in your eyesight. I have only taken Isobutyl Nitrite so from my experience the spots disappear. I have heard that isopropyl can cause permanent problems, so I would avoid that formula, but I can’t prove this either way.
  6. Intense huffing can result in searing of the esophageal tube and nose. It’s a tiny bit painful and your breathing may be restricted for sometime but it will go away. Take a couple days off if symptoms persist.
  7. If you spill poppers on yourself or on clothes, wash it off immediately. It burns and it reeks.
  8. Do not have open flames near poppers. Duh.
  9. The EU declared poppers to be strongly linked to reproductive cancer… I’ll believe it when I see it. I Haven’t seen or read anything particularly convincing. But it’s a risk everyone should be made aware of.
To be clear, I am just an amateur popperbator that loves poppers and wants everyone to be safe. Poppers are generally very safe and definitely fun. That being said, people should know the risks of taking them like every drug out there. If you came to this subreddit deeply alarmed about something, take a deep breath of oxygen and relax. The vast majority of the time, what you are experiencing is normal and will go away. If you’re still concerned, seek professional medical assistance. Enjoy huffing!
